They had already dented the mainstream, reaching the Top 10 with "Sweet Home Alabama" in 1974, and picking up a sizable following of Southern rock fans since releasing their 1973 debut. But Street Survivors, released on Oct. 17, 1977, was supposed to catapult them into a whole other realm of rock-star popularity. The year before, they added a guitarist, Steve Gaines, who also sang and wrote. They sharpened their pop hooks, becoming a more soulful group as a result.

Southern Rock Lynyrd Skynyrd. Band Name Lynyrd Skynyrd. Album Name Street Survivors.
Released on October 17, 1977, the original pressing of the cover of the Lynyrd Skynyrd album Street Survivors had a photograph of the band standing in flames. Eerily, Steve Gaines’ (in the middle) eyes were closed and his head appears to be engulfed in the flames. Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant both died tragically in a plane crash three days after the albums release on October 20, 1977. Out of respect for the deceased (and at the request of Teresa Gaines, Steve’s widow), MCA Records withdrew the original cover and replaced it with a similar image of the band against a simple black background
Street Survivors is the fifth studio album by the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released on October 17, 1977. The LP is the last Skynyrd album recorded by original members Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, and is the sole Skynyrd studio recording by guitarist Steve Gaines
