Curly Seckler isn’t necessarily a household name, not like fellow bluegrassers Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Lester Flatt or Earl Scruggs. John Ray Curly Seckler has long been regarded as one of the premier tenor singers in the history of bluegrass music. Working with the greats of the genre’s first generation, he witnessed the music’s birth and growth over the course of seventy years. His professional career, which began in 1935, actually predated bluegrass by ten years. CHAPTER 1 Down in Caroline: 1919–1939.
