This set by saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble features an odd mixture of styles, including avant-garde jazz, African roots music, rock, funk and folk music. Due to the amount of improvising that takes place in the frequently dense ensembles, the music should be considered jazz despite the other influences. Apfelbaum is the strongest soloist (particularly on tenor), and there are some good spots for Paul Hanson's bassoon, Will Bernard's rockish guitar, Tony Jones' violent tenor and Jeff Cressman's spirited trombone among others. Although not a total success, Signs of Life shows signs of innovation.
Peter Apfelbaum does an amazing job of combining world music with traditional american jazz. The result is a wonderfully balanced CD of an ensemble with a great groove and even better musicianship. The instrumentation is truly unique as is the sound of the orchestra. For those of you who are wary of the avant-garde this may not be for you, but the arrangements are such that it may be a great intro to this style of music

Peter Apfelbaum (born August 21, 1960) is an American avant-garde jazz pianist, tenor saxophonist, drummer and composer born in Berkeley, California. He first emerged on the jazz scene in the late 1970s, performing with Carla Bley from 1978–1982 and touring with Warren Smith and Karl Berger. Around this time Apfelbaum also studied and worked with musicians involved with the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York. In 1991 his album Signs of Life, recorded with The Hieroglyphics Ensemble, went to No. 14 on Billboard's "top contemporary jazz albums. The latest incarnation of this group, The New York Hieroglyphics, released "It Is Written" in 2005, featuring members from the original group and New York-based musicians such as Patrice Blanchard, Dafnis Prieto, Josh Roseman, and Abdoulaye Diabate.
On its second album, saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum's worldbeat big band slips a bit from the tightrope it had walked successfully on its debut, teetering away from the genuinely attractive global jazz-fusion of the first album and toward the self-indulgent and overly impressionistic exoticism that lesser bands have already explored fully. In other words, as interesting as most of these compositions are in theory (highlife morphs into reggae segues into mbaqanga, all with brainy horn charts), they tend to be pretty tedious in practice.
