In contrast to the lucrative deal, Greer mentions that The cost for recording Alien Lanes, if you leave out the beer, was about ten dollars. Alien Lanes Q&A.

28 tracks have never gone by so quickly for me. Almost all of them have interesting ideas and sticky choruses, but I just wish that some concepts were a little better developed. Or consider a donation?

After 1994's charmingly sloppy Bee Thousand gained Guided By Voices a nationwide cult following (instead of the local cult following they were accustomed to), 1995's Alien Lanes found Robert Pollard and his partners in hard pop cleaning up their act a bit. For the most part, Alien Lanes isn't radically different from Bee Thousand - it was primarily recorded on a four-track cassette machine (and sounds like it), and Guided By Voices was still a garage band with more in the way of inspiration than chops.

Alien Lanes is a 1995 (see 1995 in music) album by lo-fi band Guided by Voices, their eighth full length album. It is, along with Bee Thousand, widely considered among the band's best albums. Pitchfork Media have included Alien Lanes in both of their 'Top 100 Albums of the 90s' polls, at No. 33 and 27 respectively. Magnet (magazine) named it the best album of 1995.

Probably my second favorite GBV album, but this one really does have my favorite songs by the band. An essential 90s rock album for anyone to own. This is probably the copy to get if you want this album on vinyl. Obviously the album is "lo-fi" but the newest pressings cut at Truetone are just totally off from the CD master tonally, taking any remaining low end and throwing it out. These copies were pressed at RTI and cut by Kevin Gray, but they're obviously beholden to GBV's lo-fi sound. Setup: SL-1700 / ATVM95ML / MoFi StudioPhono / SX-750 / ADS 500
This version was remastered by Carl Rowatti at Trutone, the Kevin Gray remaster was the previous release.
I just noticed that my Side 2 label has Auditorium/Motor Away after Alright..Anyone else have that?
Full of non-fill, and even when it's not, the mastering is flat and bright compared to the CD master, which is surprising coming from a respected studio like Truetone. You're probably better served by the Kevin Gray cut RTI pressed version.
This is the best pressing of this classic! I did several comparisons to the repressed lps and found that this original master is the truest to the og tapes which is very important when it comes to this particular lp. No fiddling with the eq or tampering with the mix etc. This is by far the best press.
Great repressing. I believe this was remastered by Kevin Gray.
Got my copy from Turntable Lab, and the matrix etchings match this one exactly, but it's on black vinyl. No others match this in Discogs database. Anyone else have this one? It sounds as good as a GBV album from this era can be expected to sound.
The first US vinyl press from 1995 has the following info on the back cover and the labels: "cp 1995 matador records 676 broadway nyc 10012"There's a a barcode sticker on back of the shrink-wrap (no barcode printed on the jacket). The back cover of the 2009 reissue looks exactly the same but the vinyl weighs 180 gram (without the cover). The 1995 first press of Alien Lanes (vinyl, cover, shrink wrap) weighs about 267 gram.
cool, a new colour, yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn
Couldn’t agree with you more. With the 1st press being so available and also the best sounding press by a landslide, there was no reason for this.
My copy has the runout matrix listed in this entry but the inner sleeve reads “made in great britain”. Could have been exchanged by previous owner, I don’t know. Does anyone have the same?
l think this was released with a plain white inner sleeve. My copy does not have a ”release specific” inner sleeve anyway and I bought it when brand new when first released.
