Bob Dylan is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on March 19, 1962 by Columbia Records. Produced by Columbia's legendary talent scout John H. Hammond, who signed Dylan to the label, the album features folk standards, plus two original compositions, "Talkin' New York" and "Song to Woody".

I’m not sure what I was expecting from Murray Lerner’s The Other Side Of The Mirror – Bob Dylan At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965, which I went to see last night at the BFI Southbank last night. It was going to be fascinating, for sure. That much would have been evident from the clips we’ve seen down the years, most recently in Martin Scorsese’s No Direction Home

Those who saw Dylan play his first electric show at Newport in '65 offer differing yet still compatible memories of that seminal rock music event. His first recording session was Mitch Ryder’s Devil With a Blue Dress On. He co-founded the Goldberg/Miller Blues Band with Steve Miller and the Electric Flag, played on the famed Super Session album with Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Stephen Stills, and has written songs recorded by and played sessions with many notable musical artists

Other Versions (5 of 65) View Al. Jerry Wexler produces again but it's missing Mark Knopfler on this, the second in Dylan's Christian trilogy, the lyrics are too overtly preachy and it lacks any strong songs to hold the album up. I love a bit of Gospel but I don't think even Aretha or Ray could have saved these tunes.

When Bob Dylan went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, it would be the biggest artistic statement of Dylan's career. The date: July 25, 1965. The event: the Newport Folk Festival. Backed by guitarist Al Cooper and other members of the Paul Butterfield Blues band, along with pianist Berry Goldberg, an earnest 24-year-old Bob Dylan took the stage, an uncommon sight hanging from his shoulder: an electric guitar. The rising star had a major surprise planned for the audience, but he had no clue of the controversy he was about to stir. Dylan's performance was innocent enough. But regardless, suffering critical assaults became a mainstay for Dylan after the '65 Newport controversy, and soon afterward the lk-rocker would quit performing live altogether for a period of eight years.

Bob Dylan released his first partially electric album Bringing it All Back Home in March 1965 two months before Newport and no doubt many in the audience had purchased a copy and were familiar with electric Dylan. Even if you hadn't, Bob had also released the electric single Subterranean Homesick Blues which had recieved radio play and was a minor . chart hit which others in the audience may have heard. His first four albums were all acoustic folk. His fourth album August 1964′s Another Side of Bob Dylan was a bit different, it did not have the lyrical subject matter of typical folk music, although still acoustic it was introspective and written by an artist who was on his own personal music journey.
