Expert Knob Twiddlers is a 1996 studio album by Mike Paradinas and Richard D. James. On 14 July 2016, Planet Mu announced that a reissued version would be released with seven bonus tracks in September 2016. Mike Paradinas described the sound of the album as "an updated version of easy listening and funk". James had heard the music Paradinas had made under the name of Jake Slazenger and invited him to create tracks.

The style-blending, however, cancels out the particular attractions of both artists, and the listener is left with a somewhat bland album. Fans of Aphex and µ-Ziq will be excited, but newcomers should go elsewhere before they dig this deep.

So you might consider Expert Knob Twiddlers to be James’ version of Quiet Nights. Though it’s a low-key record that doesn’t pretend to be about innovation, Expert Knob Twiddlers is interesting as a time capsule. It was recorded on relatively crude equipment in 1994, when both James and Paradinas were working at an early peak and releasing massive amounts of music under a variety of names, and it was released in ’96, when James was basically a superstar as Aphex Twin. In every gesture, it feels tied to the mid-’90s, offering Mike and Rich’s version of the Gen X nostalgia that was everywhere at the time.

Expert Knob Twiddlers, released 20 years ago on Rephlex and reissued this month on Planet Mu, is the product of alcohol-fueled jam sessions, in which the two artists bounced off each other over arrangements that pop and resettle like some sort of psychedelic snowglobe. Aside from it being an Aphex Twin and µ-Ziq collaboration, this record's spirit of fun has afforded it a cult status. The tracklist is tweaked to make room for the additional tracks. Vodka (Mix 2)" and "Jelly Fish (Mix 2)" are the new standouts, but it's cuts from the vaults, like "Portamento Gosh" and "Clissold Bathroom," that quietly complete the album.

Rarest item in my collection. Sounds really nice, love the design, overall just a really good reissue of a stellar album.
I fucking almost choked by that price. 20 grand? Get real.
ordered mine from the bandcamp, had no idea how many there was, now its my rarest item.... was less than 20$.......... Wow... wow... wow.....
Mike & Rich - Expert Knob Twiddlers // Limited to 200 Cassettes
Do you have a source for this by any chance please? Would be great to add as part of the submission.
There were only two hundred were made. Wow not many. Really?
I have a sealed Cheetah cassette to trade for a sealed copy of this.
The real question is, how limited? Kicking myself for not getting it from the bandcamp when I had the chance.
Would really hate to see this turn into a Cheetah debacle, but even this one didn't retail for 19 f**king dollars like Cheetah
i want the cassette too, but like a bit late on it. i got the vinyl of the reissue but not the blue one. oh well to me its worth it to have it again on black vinyl. maybe the cassette will show up on here for $10 someday.
