United States Live was the third album release by avant-garde singer-songwriter Laurie Anderson. Released as a 5-record boxed set (later reissued on four CDs), the album was recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City in February 1983. United States was Anderson's magnum opus performance-art piece featuring musical numbers, spoken word pieces, and animated vignettes about life in the United States.

Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most reknowned – and daring – creative pioneers. Known primarily for her multimedia presentations, she has cast herself in roles as varied as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist. Other record releases include Mister Heartbreak, United States Live, Strange Angels, Bright Red, and the soundtrack to her feature film Home of the Brave. A deluxe box set of her Warner Brothers output, Talk Normal, was released in the fall of 2000 on Rhino/Warner Archives. The piece was performed as part of the Groningen Festival honoring Laurie Anderson in Fall 2008 with the Noord Nederlands Orkest.

It's not the first place I'd recommend going to hear Anderson's work, but for those so inclined it's well worth the effort.

Co-producer, Violin, Voice, Artwork By, Written-By – Laurie Anderson. Engineer – Leanne Ungar. Engineer – Mike Krowiak (tracks: A1 to A7), Robert Harari (tracks: B1 to J11).

Laurie's grand scale opus United States remains a benchmark for musical ingenuity. Many stand out tracks such as the life of a performance artist in "New York Social Life", the dark metallic trance of "Closed Circuit", the funny story of the frightened airplane passenger turns sinister in "Language of the Future". The centerpiece of the show is Laurie's digital aria "O Superman". The William Burroughs inspired "Language is a virus" preceded by "Difficult Listening Hour" where Laurie speaks through a filter that gives her voice a deep Burroughesque edge. Laurie plays with language, objectivity, experimentation and logic. Yet for all the technical wonder that is Laurie Anderson... this is poorly documented... a fact Laurie herself admits. A video of the performance would have been even better. To date, Laurie has only released one performance commercially in the form of the film Home of the Brave. She may be going the way of Aeschylus of whom only about ten percent of his work is available today. We must hope not.
The credits are helpful, but could be more precise. A person does not perform on every track within the range of tracks given for that person.
