The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, The Ministry of Truth with lies, The Ministry of Love with torture, and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation (Orwell 178). This is an important example of irony because it is used to show the complete disconnect from the morals and principles of a free society. The main character, Winston Smith, is somewhat of an ironic character himself. He is not the typical protagonist. Throughout his life, Orwell had experiences that helped shape his view of these government types. As a young man, Orwell worked as a peace officer in Burma. There, he saw the way the British government treated the native Burmese people.
War is Peace means that while Oceania is at war with other countries, the people will maintain united because they have a common enemy. Therefore, by keeping war, people don’t have enemies inside the country, because they are busy fighting enemies outside the country. In 1984, the war isn’t even necessary, but is kept as a means to control the people. The contradiction with this quote is that obviously war and peace are opposites. The strength of the party relies in the ignorance of the people. The contradiction in this quote is that as we see nowadays, the more knowledge you have the more powerful you are. This is because the person who has more information has more advantage in managing a situation. It’s easier for that person to convince others to follow him/her. Without knowledge, people are subject to obedience.
War is peace could be interpreted as the fact that plenty of jobs are created during wartime providing peace and security for many not directly involved. Freedom is slavery could refer to the idea that they would be better off as they are without being liberated (Echoes of the war is Afghanistan here). Ignorance is strength can relate to the propaganda given to people during wartime to spur them on, while they are oblivious to the actual predicament. These are just brief statements I just came up with and haven't thought them out indepth, but I hope it helps.

Especially the first two slogans – War is Peace and Freedom is Slavery – fit to this category of contradiction. But they also exemplify why doublethink is an important tool for Orwell. After all, without doublethink, it is impossible for the people to believe the contradictions. Contemporary application – Ignorance is Strength. The last slogan may not be as paradoxical as the previous two. There is a certain level of ignorance that we even admire – . in such sayings as ‘the fool and his smile’, or the current trend of emphasising how hard it is to live as a smart person (sidenote: this is of course a true statement of being an idiot). For Orwell, the last slogan encouraged the acceptance of the Party line as factual without asking for reasons or purposes, and especially without questioning INGSOC as such.
