The Goat Rodeo Sessions is a 2011 collaborative album by Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile. The album won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album and the Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Meyer previously collaborated with Ma on Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey, and with Thile on Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile. In 2008, Meyer and Thile played on Ma's Songs of Joy and Peace and the three discussed a future collaboration.

Classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma, virtuoso mandolinist-folk musician Chris Thile, bluegrass string player Stuart Duncan, bassist-composer Edgar Meyer, a. .In The Goat Rodeo Sessions, five accomplished musicians of starkly different artistic backgrounds, but bound together by love of their art, joined forces. The result was a mesmerizing fusion of bluegrass, classical music, country, jazz, and other folk music styles that refuses categorization. The project began as a 2011 collaborative album, blossomed into a series of live concerts, and culminated in winning the 2013 Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical)

Aoife O'Donovan lends some vocals along w Thile on a couple of tracks to change things up. This stands with OConnor et al's Appalachian Journey and Short Trip Home (w Meyer, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush & Mike Marshall) as the very best of this style of acoustic playing. For those 1 star raters (haters?)

The last time cellist Yo-Yo Ma teamed with bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin player Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers fame) for a classical/bluegrass hybrid, the result was the gold-selling Songs of Joy & Peace. Here, Ma, Meyer, and Thile are joined by fiddler Stuart Duncan in a different kind of string quartet

The Goat Rodeo Sessions is the perhaps not-so-unlikely collaboration between mandolinist Chris Thile, bassist Edgar Meyer, fiddle player Stuart Duncan and ubiquitous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. These four master musicians have together made some of the most lyrical and captivating music of 2011. As expected, the playing is superlative. The compositions were born of group improvisations but, while each musician is given ample room to shine, it is when they are truly playing together that the real drama unfolds. These are world-class musicians in a novel setting recorded in a pristine fashion.

The Goat Rodeo Sessions combines the talents of four different solo artists, cello virtuoso Yo-Yo Ma, mandolin master Chris Thile, bluegrass fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer, each a Grammy Award winning star in their own right, to create a unique, genre-breaking sound that’s part composed, part improvised and uniquely American. The music is so difficult to pull off, the group likens it to a Goat Rodeo – an aviation term for a situation in which 100 things need to go right to avoid disaster. The album is highlighted by an appearance by vocalist Aoife O’Donovan.
