In the Absence of Truth is the fourth full-length studio album by Los Angeles, California-based post-metal band ISIS, released by Ipecac Recordings on October 31, 2006. Vinyl release was handled by Conspiracy Records. The album expands upon the group's previous full-length, Panopticon, further exploring lead singer Aaron Turner's clean vocals (though his former techniques, which relied more on screaming and growling are still present as well).
Every album from the band has different sound that suits its concept and highlights its specific mood. In the Absence of Truth is obviously not an exception. As this is their most "post" and least "metal" record, the sound is more airy and organic than ever before. Its oneiric, gloomy atmosphere is highlighted with organic guitar distortion and naturally sounding drums. With the release of In the Absence of Truth, Isis has justly earned the comparison as ‘the Sigur Rós of metal’. Isis has strayed further from their metal roots than ever, finally crossing the boundary into post-rock. Clean vocals are more prevalent and higher in the mix than any of Isis’ other albums, but work extremely well with Isis’ developed sound.
Isis's elegant fourth full-length, In the Absence of Truth, comes packed with surprises. As might be expected following their 2004 breakthrough and subsequent big-time tour with Tool, the Los Angeles quintet expands the template solidified (and some would say mastered) on Oceanic and pushed to the outer limits amid Panopticon 's sloshy trenches. It's a tad like Isis from the Oceanic Remixes, Reinterpretations album, though they're adding the extraneous elements themselves.
Another aspect of In the Absence of Truth that really makes it stick out like a sore thumb is the substantial emphasis on elegant playing rather than the in your face style the band normally embodies so well. Like Neurosis, their innovative take on metal happens to be what makes them so amazing, but throwing a chunk of those elements away was indeed a risky move that paid off more than the band could have possibly imagined. These songs prove how dynamic the band can truly be as a whole and how this album has something every fan could want from an Isis record. It's an accumulation of everything the band can do so exceptionally well into the very last song. Out of the band’s five closers, Garden of Light exists as the one that holds the most weight.

Isis continued to challenge listeners' minds as much as their head-banging skills on 2004's Panopticon, and album that saw the band pushing their limits even further, through vocalist Aaron Turner who explores his vocal range further than he ever did on previous work. While his growling "metal voice" still makes appearances, it largely seems to serve as a tool for emotion and juxtaposition than anything else, but I am certainly not about to tell anyone what Isis "means" by anything. In the Absence of Truth's instrumentation is nothing short of stunning. In the past, Isis used long, slow build-ups before exploding into heavier territory. That still happens here from time to time, though not as frequently as one might hope/expect, although when it does occur it is nothing short of perfect, such as on "Dulcinia.
