Tempering dystopian electronics with Morricone-esque set pieces, the UK psych soothsayers' latest album is also their most dynamic.

Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album is a studio album recorded by saxophonist John Coltrane for Impulse! Records that was first released in 2018. The recordings were made in 1963 during Coltrane's Classic Quartet period and lost for decades. Both Directions at Once was recorded in Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey on March 6, 1963, by saxophonist John Coltrane and his Quartet: double bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and pianist McCoy Tyner.

Coltrane is a 1962 studio album by jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. When reissued on CD, it featured a Coltrane composition dedicated to his hero "Big Nick" Nicholas which Coltrane would record later the same year with his Ellington collaboration Duke Ellington & John Coltrane. The composition "Tunji" was written by Coltrane in dedication to the Nigerian drummer, Babatunde Olatunji.

This album, recorded in September 1957, marked John Coltrane’s comeback after his heroin use led to his ejection from Miles Davis’ band earlier in the year. After going cold turkey and successfully beating his addiction, Coltrane was a man reborn whose music became more sharply focused, especially after he began working with Thelonious Monk. Recorded in 1959 while Coltrane was still playing in Miles Davis’ band, Giant Steps marked a significant stride forward for the saxophonist, who, with the title track in particular – based on a cyclical series of descending chord changes – captured perhaps the ultimate expression of bebop. Having taken bebop to its limits, it was no wonder that Trane changed musical direction after this album, opting to explore modal jazz, which offered more freedom for improvisation. As well as the classic title song, Giant Steps included the haunting ballad ‘Naima’, named after his first wife.

An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone

AM: From athletes to musicians, the truly great artist of any medium always make it look (or in this case, sound) easy. RK: The tone, feel, and improvisation style that Coltrane achieves on this album is something that saxophonists are emulating to this day, more than 50 years after its release. That being said, Mr. PC (Paul Chambers) is the unsung hero of this album. He holds down the low end with such a large sense of command, groove, and sophistication. The density of the piano makes it possible for the bass to solo over the head out - and it was all recorded two days after Africa/Brass.
