Georg Solti's most enduring achievements are his recordings of Richard Wagner's music dramas, made in the 1960s and '70s for Decca. His classic renditions with the Vienna Philharmonic of Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal, and the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen are not to be missed by any serious student of great opera recordings
Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO), under the direction of the late Sir Georg Solti, offers a magnificent performance of this great work. Solti had a reputation for demanding crisp precision and fast tempi from the orchestras he conducted. The VPO and Solti do not disappoint with Schubert's Ninth. Tempi are uniformly faster than the other versions of this work that I've heard.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Georg Solti, who was in his forties at this time, the preeminent Wagner vocalists of the 20th, and acclaimed producer and avid Wagnerian John Culshaw, were all brought together to perform this masterpiece. Together they produced a recording full of passion and purpose. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra enjoys special distinction for its long history of performing Wagner as part of its regular repertoire. Under the direction of Solti, the orchestra adds flesh and blood to this piece, delivering a rich and robust performance that does not neglect a single note (as of yet this is the only complete recording from Decca of Wagner’s Ring performed by the VPO). In regards to the vocals, the premiere vocalists of the 20th century were brought together, with each cast in the role best suited to their respective talents. The casting by producer Culshaw is flawless,. Wiener Philharmoniker Conducted by Sir Georg Solti Chor der Wiener Staatsoper, Chor-Meister: Wilhelm Pitz (GÖTTERDÜMMERUNG).
Conductor: Sir Georg Solti Orchestra/Ensemble: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna State Opera Chorus Number of Discs: 16. Works on This Recording. The Vienna Philharmonic, one of the very finest orchestras in the world, plays with a sure grasp of Wagner's style, with passionate intensity and with impeccable musicianship. Solti's epic vision of the Ring glows in its details and overwhelms in its sweeping drama. A number of very fine interpretations of the Ring have been recorded since, but Solti's version remains close to the top and is in a class by itself. Casting the many daunting roles was a challenge, but for the most part the soloists are wonderfully effective
