Scottish folk music (also Scottish traditional music) is music that uses forms that are identified as part of the Scottish musical tradition. After World War II traditional music in Scotland was marginalised, but, unlike in England, it remained a much stronger force, with the Céilidh house still present in rural communities until the early 1950s and traditional material still performed by the older generation, even if the younger generation tended to prefer modern styles of music. Acts that were popularised included John Strachan (1875–1958), Jimmy MacBeath (1894–1972), Jeannie Robertson (1908–75) and Flora MacNeil (1928-2015). A number festivals also popularised.

English folk musician Kate Rusby, who won a Mercury prize nomination with her 1999 album Sleepless, headlines the eighth Ceilidh Culture, Edinburgh's festival of traditional music and culture, which runs 26 March to 18 April. Rusby, reckoned to be one of the most talented contemporary folkies around, plays at the recently re-opened Usher Hall (18 April).

When Alan Lomax set out to collect field recordings for his lauded World Library of Folk and Primitive Music collection, he had expected rural Scotland to be a mere footnote to the formidable material he recorded with Ewan MacColl, but his guide, the esteemed poet, songwriter, and folklorist Hamish Henderson, showed the ethnomusicologist a culture that was so rich with song that it. would take years to chronicle even half of it. The Edinburgh People's Festival began in 1947 as a showcase for the Scottish working-class movement.
