Leonin, Perotin: Sacred Music from Notre-Dame Cathedral. Even though I enjoy Early Music, I am sadly late in discovering this album by the seven-member Hilliard Ensemble, performing works by Perotin and other 12th-century compositions. The first track alone sold me the album, as it so uplifting as to be angelic. The great variety of phrasing patterns across subsequent tracks, some having a mind-boggling phased sound, are remarkable.

Had Notre Dame Cathedral actually burned to the ground in yesterday's devastating fire, we would have lost one of the architectural wonders of the Western. So had there not been Notre Dame polyphony, would there be today the high lonesome of country music? Would we today enjoy squeezing into a barbershop quartet's corset of tight harmonies? Would Adele or Mariah Carey be able to dazzle us with their florid vocal stylings?
