TOWER OF POWER is a jazz related rnb funk music artist. Tower of Power (or TOP for short) is an American R&B-based horn section and band, originating in Oakland, California, that has been performing for over 43 years. They are best known for their funky soul sound highlighted by a powerful horn section. There have been several lead vocalists, the most famous being Lenny Williams, who fronted the band between early 1973 and late 1974, the period of their greatest commercial success.

About Tower of Power. Bay Area funksters who, after several well-received performances at San Francisco's Fillmore in the late 1960s, tore through the '70s with their intricate first-rate Funk. Their complex arrangements drew traces of Jazz, but the music was all Funk. Bottomed out by a baritone sax, horn soaked hits like "What is Hip" and "You're Still a Young Man" had many a rump shaking

The Tower of Power finally found their ideal lead singer on this album. Lenny Williams came aboard and gave them both the up-tempo belter and convincing balladeer they had previously lacked. They landed their biggest single hit, "So Very Hard to Go," and also had two other top tunes in "What Is Hip" and "This Time It's Real. The arrangements and production were also excellent, and the horn section was at its explosive best.

Blending of soul, funk, jazz, and rock like no other band, Tower of Power has created their own unique genre, not easily fitting into traditionally defined categories.
