Recorded live at the Pawnshop, Stockholm, January 22, 1969.
Recorded live at a Stockholm club called the Pawnshop, this set reveals Wickman at the very height of his powers as a melodic improviser who took much of his notion of phrasing from saxophonist Paul Desmond and from fellow clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre. The program is mostly standards since this was a kind of loose jam group and was the recording debut of drummer Per Hulten, who went on to play with Flip Phillips, Barney Kessel, Zoot Sims, Dexter Gordon, and others. The set opens with "Laura," simply articulated and lyrically graced by the sheer elegance of Wickman's improvising.

Putte Wickman was born on September 10, 1924, in the Swedish town of Falun. He learned the clarinet, and by the time he left school he was ready for a professional career in Sweden. When he started out, bebop was just becoming the rage, and he adapted quite easily. He performed with Simon Brehm and Charlie Norman for a period, but eventually moved out on his own to start his own gospel/jazz group with pianist Reinhold Svensson . He began touring internationally in the '70s, mostly as a solo act. By the '90s, he was not only still playing live but recording again, appearing at the Swedish Jazz Festival among other engagements. Bradley Torreano, Rovi.
Putte Wickman 5/2/2005. Good jazz players, like good wine, age well. Venerable Swedish jazz clarinet player, Putte Wickman, was in his early 70s when he performed at the Swedish Jazz Festival in 1993 and 1994. His playing was vigorous, energetic, and as compelling as it was when he started playing professionally in 1948 - and his virtuosity more pronounced. At the 1993 festival, Wickman is joined by Roger Kellaway, and they apply their considerable technique and artistry to four standards and to a tune written by their friend Red Mitchell, with whom they both have performed. No improvisational style is alien to these two masters, whether it be advanced or traditional or somewhere in between, with each tune having a boppish tinge to it.
Birthdays: Jimmy Cobb, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Andy Shepperd.
