Gang of Youths are ready for big things. Their debut album, The Positions, practically demands it. It’s filled with songs which will one day, no doubt, fill stadiums. Moods and tempos shift, confidently led by Le’aupepe’s vocals, which crackle with intensity. Gang of Youths thrive on emotionally-driven big ballads that are cinematic in feel – think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco, Kings of Leon and Elbow. The album is dense, richly textured and sprawls through numerous realms of sound, with layers of soaring guitars, strings, glistening synths, lingering piano riffs and pockets of glitch. Pensive opener Vital Signs has a light Americana feel while a jerky new wave riff holds Poison Drum together.

After decades of songs about life and death, love and heartbreak, drugs, alcohol and waving your arms in the air like you just don’t care, cancer is on the lyrical menu. Country star Adam Harvey had a crack at this difficult subject last year in his single She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful and Melbourne hardcore band Confession provoked attention with their emphatic musical statement [email protected] Cancer, inspired by the health battles of the parents of their frontman. His partner survived, their relationship didn’t and The Positions chronicles their battles against a bold rock soundtrack which recalls stadium kings from Bruce Springsteen to Bono. It affects one in two people, 50 per cent of the population. And no one wants to talk about it because it’s awkward, the 23-year-old songwriter says.

The Positions digs deep into what it means to be a survivor, a persistent experiencer of things, a person that is broken but not broken down. At the end of this album, the last lonely notes float out of frame, ready to continue living outside the context of a misfortune. Magnolia sounds like Gang of Youths doing a There Will Be Fireworks cover. Which is, of course, amazing.
