Brian Eno. The Shutov Assembly. CD - Hannibal Records 1478). If The Shutov Assembly is reminiscent of Brian Eno's earlier "ambient" music projects dating back to Discreet Music (1975), it shouldn't be surprising. Recorded between 1985 and 1990, the atmospheric, slow-moving sound patterns are more, the artist contends, like paintings than music. The Shutov Assembly, dedicated to Russian painter Sergei Shutov, is, like the similar works in his catalog (he cites Music for Films, On Land, Music for Airports, Thursday Afternoon, and Nerve Net, as well as Discreet Music), as much a concept as a record.

Notes

Four-song promotional-only cassette given only to interviewers and journalists by Warner Bros. Records.
Eno mentions this cassette in an interview published in Opal Information #17, in 1990: "In fact," he says to the interviewer, "that other tape you've got has three pieces and then a piece called Juju Space Jazz which belongs to a different record, something else I'm working on." The EnoWeb at hyperreal.org also mentions "a four (song) tape Brian was using for a lecture series and were described as works in progress -- those at the time were described as The Shutov Assembly working tapes. Track listing for those four tracks: 'Ripples in Time,' 'Her Enchanting Coldness,' 'Planet Dawn,' 'Juju Space Jazz.'"
