The Birth, Life, Death And Resurrection Of Christ (Part II). B1. Let All The Peoples Praise The Lord. Composed By – Dressler.
The St. Olaf Choir is a premier a cappella choir based in Northfield, Minnesota. Founded in 1912 by Norwegian immigrant F. Melius Christiansen, the choir has been influential to other church and college choirs for its performance of unaccompanied sacred music. Conducted since 1990 by Anton Armstrong, there have been four conductors in the choir's 107 year history. Olaf student who directed the singing at Sunday services graduated from college in 1907 and a new director had to be found. The unanimous choice of the choir members was Professor Christiansen and when he was interviewed he gladly accepted. Inasmuch as the choir was now largely composed of students from the college, its name was changed to The St. Olaf Lutheran Choir. Concerts on that first tour were in the nature of a song service. It was difficult for Dr. Christiansen and the choir to refrain from laughing, but somehow we managed to get along. Again the choir sang loud, this time the last number before intermission, and when we finished, the goats, that had now come all the way down were gathered just outside the window which we had removed, gave a veritable concert of their own.
Founded in 1912, the St. Olaf Choir, with 75 mixed voices, is the pioneer a cappella choir in the United States .
Olaf C. Christiansen (1901 – 1984) was an American composer, professor, and conductor in the Lutheran choral tradition. He succeeded his father as the second conductor of the St. Olaf Choir, which he led for 27 years. The second son of famed choral conductor F. Melius Christiansen, Olaf grew up in Northfield, Minnesota where he was actively engaged in both athletics and music. While in high school, Olaf played with the St. Olaf Band
Christiansen had never heard of St. Olaf, but he went into the city to meet the president. NEW YORK concertgoers moved slowly through the foyer of the Metropolitan Opera House after an evening of music by the St. Olaf Choir. The gay chatter of an after-concert crowd filled the air as people stepped out into the snow of the February night and into their waiting cars.
