This Dorian album gives us the complete Smetana Czech Dances performed by Antonin Kubalek. The recording was produced in 1988. Kubalek was born in Czechoslavakia but came to Canada in 1968 when the Russians invaded his homeland. He was both performer and educator during his life having served on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto among others. Glenn Gould was so impressed with his playing that he produced an album of Kubalek performing the Korngold Sonata. Smetana composed two groups of Czech Dances and both are on this Dorian album. While Antonin Kubalek is not very well known, his recordings of this and other Czech music establish him as a peer of such greats as Ivan Moravec and Rudolf Firkusny. Dorian's sound is, as always, perfect.
