The one and only time I saw Todd Rundgren live was on the 4th August 1979 supporting Led Zeppelin at what would turn out to be the mighty Zep’s penultimate gig on home soil. Back then I knew nothing about Rundgren’s music, and what I heard in that Hertfordshire back garden left little impression on me. It was only many years later that I started investigating the highly varied and stylistically shifting back catalogue of the American musical polymath, but even now, the years beyond 1974’s Todd remain largely unexplored, with the exception of the first two Utopia albums. Todd Rundgren's Utopia is the debut album by the American band Todd Rundgren's Utopia. Rundgren (who was primarily a pop musician at the time) had decided to delve into progressive rock. Putting together several musicians, including three keyboardists, the album covers a variety of styles including funk, jazz, classical and even avant-garde music.
The title might give you a bit of a clue as to what this 90-minute double album offers. Yet there are so many Rundgren releases and reissues flying around of late that what you’ll really be wanting to know is: is Live At The Electric Ballroom one of the good ones, or one of the duffers? Well, you’ll be pleased to know it’s a very decent live recording, from a year when his marbles hadn’t yet been spread too thinly. Utopia were his wildest, proggiest band on occasion, but this show keeps everything fairly direct and melodic and he sounds at ease with them and with his own material.
