The Ghost of Tom Joad" is a folk rock song written by Bruce Springsteen. It is the title track to his eleventh studio album, released in 1995. The character Tom Joad, from John Steinbeck's classic 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath, is mentioned in the title and narrative. Originally a quiet folk song, "The Ghost of Tom Joad" has also been recorded by Rage Against the Machine and Junip.

Some releases have a hype sticker on front of jewel case that says: Bruce Springsteen The Ghost Of Tom Joad The new solo album 28-481650-10. Catalog number COL 481650 2 on the back insert. Catalog number 481650 2 on the spine and disc. Manufacturing code 01-481650-10 on the back insert, disc and back of booklet. Recorded and mixed at Thrill Hill. Mastered at A&M Mastering Studios, . Modern Woody Guthrie. I really wish he made more albums like this. I cant say there is anyone in our era who can write and sing a song like Straight Time or Youngstown in this style.

It became the title track for his stripped-down 1995 acoustic album, and a staple – usually the opening number – for the live shows that supported it. The song was also rocked up, dramatically, two years later by Rage Against the Machine, and this year Springsteen – with Rage guitarist Tom Morello in tow as part of his E Street Band – released yet another version for his latest album, High Hopes

Bruce Springsteen followed his muse on this haunting 1995 release. Perhaps that's why it barely made a dent in the marketplace, even while it thrilled the faithful who were willing to take another dark, Nebraska-like journey with him. It's abundantly clear that Springsteen had been soaking himself in the work of John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie during the writing of The Ghost of Tom Joad, but their combined influence is found on more than just the title track. I think this was the greatest Bruce Springsting album. The message of the songs and descriptions of what some people go through on this album help people understand the things which are wrong with our culture, thinking, and government. The only down side is that I can't understand the lyrics well enough without reading the lyrics off of a sheet which I got off the internet!

Opening with the title track 'The Ghost of Tom Joad', the minimal tone of Springsteen's new direction is set. Sparse acoustic backdrops, layered with subtle organs, strings and harmonicas make up most of the albums music, allowing Springsteen's distinctive voice and storytelling to guide the ebb and flow of the music. Here, there is none of the gritty power behind the Shakespearian drama of 'Backstreets' or the towering anthem 'Born to Run'. However, under no circumstances should the work on The Ghost of Tom Joad be overlooked. If nothing else, the album provides a truly immersive texture and finds Springsteen's backwater dust-bowl sensibilities at their most earnest.
