The new effort is mostly acoustic with electric guitar lines from Amanda McCoy (and some are really spectacular, like on closing track The Winds Wild Early and The Thrill of it All ). Abby Steiling’s violin is front and center on opening track Paris and Winterblue ). The instrumentation gives her plenty of space to show her stuff, and she does so to fine effect.
There’s some kind of reverence mood that takes hold when you play and sing these songs. Reverence’ is a word I heard my granddaughter’s nursery school teacher use, a Kashmiri woman. She said, ‘We don’t want to teach religion, but instil reverence. I thought that was a good word for the feeling of this music.
The Return of the Prodigal Son is an album by jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine consisting of two sessions recorded for the Blue Note label in 1967 and arranged by Duke Pearson featuring McCoy Tyner. Tracks 1, 4, 6 were originally issued on New Time Shuffle (1979, LT 993), along with tracks 1 and 3-5 from A Bluish Bag. Tracks 2-3 and 5 had previously been issued on the collection Stanley Turrentine (1975, BN-LA 394-2), whilst track 9 was released in 1995 on The Lost Grooves.

Same Old Story has the same kind of wandering, fluting melody as XTC’s Functions on the Low, the grime instrumental that gave Stormzy his big break when he used it for Shut Up; Redrum and No Sleep use the east Asian instrumentation that so often featured in early grime productions.
