Lazarus" is a song by English rock musician David Bowie. It was released on 17 December 2015 as a digital download, making it the second single from his twenty-fifth studio album, Blackstar (2016). It is Bowie's last single to be released during his lifetime. The single received its world premiere on BBC Radio 6 Music's Steve Lamacq on the day of its release as a single. In addition to its release on Blackstar, the track is used in Bowie's off-Broadway musical of the same name.

The video and its accompanying album were released on Bowie’s birthday (8th January), just days before his untimely death from liver cancer. It is a supremely artistic, supremely Bowie statement: a condensation of the human narrative, birth, death, into a single song and, like the Biblical parable of Lazarus (see bottom of this annotation) death pervades in life, as life pervades in death
An album of Bowie songs sung by the cast of the epic Lazarus musical, featuring three brand new songs written by the great man himself. We should be eternally thankful that David Bowie was around to write and oversee his own tribute musical. Five years down the line we might’ve had Ben Elton hacking out the story of Ziggy Starman tackling a labyrinth full of diamond dogs to reach the Land Of The Serious Moonlight, complete with a chorus line of high-kicking Major Toms. Instead, Lazarus, a sensitive and accomplished reworking of Bowie songs acting as a sequel to his role in Nicolas Roeg’s film.
Bowie's album version of "Lazarus" will also be included on the disc. Michael C. Hall - who will take on the lead role in the musical - is set to perform at the Mercury Prize ceremony, where Bowie's final record, Blackstar, has been nominated for the award. The ceremony takes place on Sept. 15. David Bowie's 'Blackstar' Album Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart. View the full track listing for the double-disc Lazarus Cast Album below
David Bowie’s final recordings will be released next month. Bowie’s studio versions of No Plan, Killing a Little Time, and When I Met You, which were recorded with the ★ band and co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, will appear on the second disc of a new cast album for Bowie’s Lazarus musical. Until now, the songs have been heard only as performed by the cast of the musical, which premiered last year in New York before scheduling a run in London. The album is out October 21 on ISO/Columbia/RCA; see the full tracklist below.
With the benefit of hindsight, she reappraises an extraordinary album. I assumed that Lazarus was written in character, like other Blackstar songs, not least Sue (Or in a Season of Crime), in which the ailing Sue seems to be tended, then perhaps murdered, by the protagonist. Of all the conspiracy theories and occultists having a field day in Bowie’s symbolism, no one has quite explained what’s going on in Sue. The biblical Lazarus, of course, didn’t actually stay dead; Bowie’s musical of the same name was a sequel of sorts to The Man Who Fell to Earth, in which an alien thoroughly fails to assimilate on Earth
Lazarus (Original Cast Recording) is a soundtrack album by the New York cast of the musical Lazarus, which was written and composed by David Bowie and Enda Walsh. The soundtrack was released on 21 October 2016. The album includes three previously unreleased songs by Bowie, "No Plan", "Killing a Little Time" and "When I Met You". The album was scheduled and recorded on 11 January 2016, which turned out to be the day after Bowie's death.
