Edward Artemiev is best known for his electronic music scores to three of Andrei Tarkovsky's most striking films: Solaris (1972), The Mirror (1974), and Stalker (1979). Then it comes as no surprise that the music has been packaged and repackaged in various ways, official (including their first appearance in the mid-'80s on the Soviet record label Melodia) or not. This collection remains the most extensive and best presented. The particularity of this album resides in its track list. Choosing against logic, it alternates pieces (or "scenes") from Stalker and Solaris - there is only one track from Mirror.

This is a crushingly dull and cheesy album full of the worst 'New Agey' keyboards, artificial flutes, inane and emotionless electronics you're likely to hear this side of sub-standard 'Tangerine Dream' from the early nineties.

Edward Artemiev's work for the Tarkovsky films; Solaris, The Mirror, and Stalker are obvious exceptions. I can't help but compare it with Robert Rich and . ustmord's Stalker, a tribute composition saluting Tarkovsky's film. Both are creepy and atmospheric. I have some Artemiev's tracks on a album that collects experiments with the Ans made by various composers, Schnittke, Gubaidulina, Artemiev, Oleg Buloshkin, Denisov. Alien music that sounds truly ahead of its time. I agree with that comparison with that album of Lustmord and Rich, it reminds a lot of that kind of dark ambient. Blancrocher, Jobis liked this post.

Solaris, The Mirror, Stalker Import. but one must remember that Artemiev was working at the edge of technical possibility in his time and inventively blending traditional and classical musical motifs with what was at the time were advanced techniques. This cd contains 7 tracks for "Solaris", 4 for "Stalker" and a single one for "Mirror". All are blended together, creating a kind of unity between the three musical scores. The album has its moments but it is sad to say that the "Mirror" track just doesn't quite work without the imagery and that the "Solaris" tracks sound too outdated.

Stalker Eduard Artemyev. 6. Exodus (From "The Mirror"). 7. They Go Long (From "Stalker"). Tarkovski par Artemiev.

Buyer beware: almost none of this music is the original soundtracks from the fine films of Tarkovsky. Instead we have expanded and newly recorded electronic music that only bears a passing resemblance to the haunting sounds heard in the original movies. Apart from "Meditation" (which sounds to be the original music) it might as well all be considered new songs by another artist. Worse still, it sounds to my ears like sub-standard Tangerine Dream from the late eighties. A terrible disappointment.
Any idea who the producer of the new/redone music is?
