Altoist Woods is joined by guitarist Harry Leahey, pianist Mike Melillo, bassist Steve Gilmore, drummer Bill Goodwin and percussionist Alyrio Lima for the live set. While Lima would soon depart and Leahey was only aboard for a second record, Gilmore and Goodwin spent over 20 years with Woods' group. Highlights of the high-quality modern bop date include "A Sleepin' Bee," "Bye Bye Baby" and a lengthy "Cheek To Cheek. But get the two-LP set if it can be found.

Phil Woods played with everyone from Bill Evans to Dizzy Gillespie, and in the ultimate old-school move, married the widow of Charlie Parker. In 1977, the same year he played the alto-sax solo on Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," Woods assembled a supple band and released a great album that kept be-bop alive as a Seventies art form, "a terrific selling point for the art of jazz improvisation. What We Said Then: "Outside of some people in the black avant-garde, Phil Woods is the most interesting alto saxophonist alive

Live from the Showboat. This album is something of a cult recording among jazz enthusiasts because of its' virtually mistake free live performance. It was also curiously handled by RCA, the original producer of it and disappeared from publication for some years. Phil Woods was an alto saxophonist who, in his prime, was the best of the best and this album stands as great testament to that.

It is called the Showboat and is named after the great Phil Woods album The Phil Woods Six-Live from the Showboat. This was one of my first jazz albums I bought in high school. I had two Phil Woods albums that I could afford with my meager paper route earnings back then, Musique Du Bois and Live from the Showboat. I played these endlessly on my parent’s turntable every time I was home
