Courtly love began in the ducal and princely courts of Aquitaine, Provence, Champagne, ducal Burgundy and the Norman Kingdom of Sicily at the end of the eleventh century  . Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204) brought ideals of courtly love from Aquitaine first to the court of France, then to England (she became queen-consort in each of these two realms in succession). Since at the time some marriages among nobility had little to do with modern perspectives of what constitutes love, courtly love was also a way for nobles to express the love not found in their marriage. Lovers" in the context of courtly love need not refer to sex, but rather to the act of loving.

Eleanor of Aquitaine was queen consort to two kings and mother to two more, making her the most powerful woman in 12th-century Europe. Eleanor of Aquitaine inherited her father's lands in 1137, and married Louis VII of France that same year. Their marriage was annulled in 1152. She then married Henry II of England, bearing him eight children including sons Richard (the Lion-Hearted) and John who would both become king. Eleanor promoted courtly culture, including troubadour songs, and was a savvy military adviser to her sons.

Here we have Eleanor of Aquitane, basically the most bitchin’ badass woman of medieval times. Eleanor was a highly educated, strong willed and fiercely political. When she was 15, she became Queen of France and traveled to fight in the second crusade. Yup, she fought in the crusades, good for her. After the crusade, she divorced her husband and married King Henry of England and had a rather unhappy marriage. Eight kids later, the couple was estranged and Eleanor sort of ran her own show and set up a salon called The Court of Love where the brightest minds of the age discussed love, marriage.

Stevie Wishart founded Sinfonye to perform and sing medieval music and improvise as musicians of that era would have done.
