Even Eric Clapton, who usually welcomes any chance to play with one of his idols, has criticized this album repeatedly in interviews, which speaks volumes in and of itself.

The story of Howlin’ Wolf’s London Sessions album has its genesis in San Francisco in August 1968 when Cream and Electric Flag played the Fillmore Auditorium. Backstage, Norman Dayron who was a staff producer for Chess Records introduced himself to Eric Clapton and Mike Bloomfield who were chatting. How would you like to make an album with Howlin’ Wolf? He said to Clapton. Unsure initially of his credentials, Clapton was hesitant, but when it was conformed that Dayron was who he said he was Clapton agreed. It only needed for the guitarists schedule to fit in with Wolf’s and it would happen.

The Wolf album is the latest in a long line of recent blues Super Session enclaves (includes Clapton, Winwood, Wyman and Watts) that rates among the most successful of these black-meets-white get-togethers. The Waters two-record set is sort of a BEST OF anthology that culls, from various earlier Waters albums, Muddy’s best performances from 1950 on down to a couple of live cuts from Waters’ legendary 1960 appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival. Put simply, the Wolf album is his best in years.
The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions, like Muddy Waters's London album, proved more successful with British audiences than American. Wolf's last album was 1973's The Back Door Wolf. Entirely composed of new material, it was recorded with musicians who regularly backed him on stage, including Hubert Sumlin, Detroit Junior, Chico Chism, Lafayette "Shorty" Gilbert and the bandleader Eddie Shaw. The album is shorter (a little more than 35 minutes) than any other he recorded, as a result of his declining health. Unlike many other blues musicians who left an impoverished childhood to begin a musical career, Burnett was always financially successful.
