Double Negative is the twelfth studio album by Low, released on September 14, 2018.
Double Negative may refer to: Double Negative (artwork), 1969 artwork on the Mormon Mesa in Nevada. Double Negative (band), hardcore punk band based in North Carolina. Double Negative (VFX), former name of DNEG, a London-based visual effects facility. Double Negative", a single release from British art rock band Grammatics. Double Negative, 2004 album by The Muffins. Double Negative: A Vicky Bauer Mystery, a 1988 book by Leona Gom. Deadly Companion, 1980 film also known as Double Negative.
Double Negative is nothing but edges. It is an album with noise coming out of its wounds. It conjures the exact inverse of the sort beautifying restoration work done on the soundtracks of vintage films to remove thumps, hums, and crackles. Here thumps, hums, and crackles are piled on and the results are rarely short of stunning. On the surface, Double Negative may appear to be a collection of songs that were composed and then dismantled, a sort of electronic-indie answer to prefab distressed jeans. This seems particularly so on tracks like opener Quorum, which feels like it’s being run over.
Double Negative is, indeed, a record perfectly and painfully suited for our time. Loud and contentious and commanding, Low fights for the world by fighting against it. It begins in pure bedlam, with a beat built from a loop of ruptured noise waging war against the paired voices of Sparhawk and Parker the moment they begin to sing during the massive Quorum. For forty minutes, they indulge the battle, trying to be heard amid the noisy grain, sometimes winning and sometimes being tossed toward oblivion. In spite of the mounting noise, Sparhawk and Parker still sing
As I sit down to write about Ted Byrnes' new tape Double Negative, I realize that there is really nothing I could bring up or praise that Sam.
Double Negative is an album that will endure for a long time. It’s a thrilling development that proves how Low continue to release music of extremely high standards, restlessly creative and never content to stand still.
